It started with a doctor’s recommendation

After a doctor’s appointment, I was advised to give up caffeine. However, the doctor also said, “You should still drink coffee — it’s very good for you.” Those were the exact words. I was horrified.

Before this, I didn’t see the point of drinking caffeine‑free coffee. I thought the entire purpose of coffee was to wake you up in the morning, and I didn’t believe giving up caffeine would solve my health issues.

Once my body adjusted, I realised something surprising: I was still addicted — not to the caffeine, but to the taste and the ritual. I never expected that. And yes, giving up caffeine did solve my medical issue

Then came the disappointment

When I started buying decaf coffee, I realised it was like playing Where’s Wally? in the supermarket. Go to a major supermarket and you’ll find an entire wall of full‑caffeine coffees — hundreds of brands. Go to one of the German discount supermarkets and you’ll find a choice of three: barista‑style instant, instant gold blend, and a filter coffee. That’s if they’re even in stock.

So I decided to sell my own

I was unimpressed with the range and taste of the decaf coffees available, so I decided to do something about it and start this shop. The idea snowballed quickly. I began speaking to roasteries who loved the concept, and their enthusiasm and willingness to get involved spurred me on.

The original plan was to sell only freshly roasted wholebean and ground decaf coffee from roasteries around the country. But remembering the lack of variety in supermarkets, I decided to also stock decaf instant coffee from Little’s — once an artisan brand, now growing rapidly after appearing on Dragon’s Den. In fact, Little’s was one of the first to say yes to being stocked here.

Mass‑produced decaf coffee is often made using chemical solvents to extract the caffeine. At ChillYerBeans, we only choose brands that use natural, chemical‑free decaffeination processes.
